Pavement Interactive

Pavement Tools Consortium (PTC). (2007). Pavement Interactive. Online Wiki site at: http://www.pavementinteractive.org. Pavement Tools Consortium, University of Washington, Seattle, WA.

Wikipedia: How to edit a page. (2007). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:How_to_edit_a_page

Wikipedia: Help: Table. (2007). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Table

  • This is your user's manual for editing pages in this Wiki.
  • I've included a reference for creating tables too. Tables are done in shorthand, which can be confusing at first but later becomes faster than any other method.

Long-Lasting Pavements

Transportation Research Board (TRB). Perpetual Bituminous Pavements. TRB Circular No. 503, TRB, National Research Council, Washington, D.C. http://onlinepubs.trb.org/onlinepubs/circulars/circular_503.pdf

  • Read the first article by Newcomb, Buncher and Huddleston. It's a good introduction to what a Perpetual Pavement is and why we are interested in them.

Muench, S.T.; Mahoney, J.P.; Pierce, L.M.; Uhlmeyer, J. and Anderson, K. (2006). The Evolution of Long-Life Concrete Pavements in Washington State. Proceedings of the International Conference on Long-Life Concrete Pavements, 24-27 October 2006, Chicago, IL. Please go to the Discussion Board to see the paper.

  • This is basically where we are with concrete pavements in Washington State.

Muench, S.T.; Mahoney, J.P.; Wataru, W.; Chong, L. and Romanowski, J. (2007). Best Practices for Long-Lasting Low-Volume Pavements. Journal of Infrastructure Systems, Vol. 13, No. 4. pp. 311-320. Please go to the Discussion Board to see the paper.

  • This is our take of how a low-volume pavement can last a long, long time.

Contemporary Issues in HMA Pavements

Pavement Tools Consortium (PTC). (January 2007). Pavement Interactive. Online Wiki site at: http://www.pavementinteractive.org. Pavement Tools Consortium, University of Washington, Seattle, WA.

Superpave Performance and Cost Comparison. (July 2004). WSDOT Materials Laboratory, WSDOT, Olympia, WA. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/biz/mats/Pavement/TechNotes/technotes.htm

  • This can show you the latest about what WSDOT thinks the Superpave mix design method has done for them. A very short read.

Longitudinal Joint Construction Techniques. (February 2003). WSDOT Materials Laboratory, WSDOT, Olympia, WA. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/biz/mats/Pavement/TechNotes/technotes.htm

Elimination of Tempreature and Density Differentials: The Cyclic Density Specification. (April 2004). WSDOT Materials Laboratory, WSDOT, Olympia, WA. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/biz/mats/Pavement/TechNotes/technotes.htm

Astec videos. I will show these in class. You can download them here if you like: http://astecinc.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=64&Itemid=471

Contemporary Issues in PCC Pavements

Pavement Tools Consortium (PTC). (2007). Pavement Interactive. Online Wiki site at: http://www.pavementinteractive.org. Pavement Tools Consortium, University of Washington, Seattle, WA.

Pierce, L.M. and Muench, S.T. Evaluation of Dowel Bar Retrofit for Long-Term Pavement Life in Washington State. WA-RD 727.1. Washington State Department of Transportation, Olympia, WA. Go to the discussion board to download this article.

  • Just read the executive summary. The entire report is FAR too long

Contemporary Issues in Surface Treatments

Janisch, D.W. and Gaillard, F.S. (1998). Minnesota Seal Coat Handbook. Minnesota Local Road Research Board, Office of Minnesota Road Research, Maplewood, MN. Available at: http://www.lrrb.org/pdf/200634.pdf.

  • Read chapters 1, 2, 3 and 7. This is the best manual on seal coats, period.

Pavement Sealer Applications. (February 2007). WSDOT Materials Laboratory, WSDOT, Olympia, WA. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/biz/mats/Pavement/TechNotes/technotes.htm

Specifications and QA

Muench, S.T. and Mahoney, J.P. (2001). A Quantification and Evaluation of WSDOT’s Hot-Mix Asphalt Concrete Statistical Acceptance Specification. WA-RD 517.1. WSDOT, Olympia, WA. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/research/reports/fullreports/517.1.pdf

Optional Additional Reading

Willoughby, K.A. and Mahoney, J.P. (2007). An Assessment of WSDOT's Hot Mix Asphalt Quality Control and Assurance Requirements. WA-RD 517.2. WSDOT, Olympia, WA. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/research/reports/fullreports/517.2.pdf

  • The summary and conclusions chapter is especially useful. Read this part. It is quite a long report otherwise.

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). (2008). Standard Specifications for Road, Bridge and Municipal Construction, 2008. M 41-10. WSDOT, Olympia, WA. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/publications/manuals/fulltext/M41-10/SS2008.pdf

Minnesota Department of Transportation Research Report MN/RC-1998-18. Minnesota Department of Transportation. St. Paul, MN. http://www.pavementpreservation.org/library/getfile.php?journal_id=578

  • Read the executive summary and the conclusions - should go real quick (don't read all 168 pages)

Muench, S.T. and CEE 597 class from Spring 2008. UW corrections to PaLATE for use in class. Spent a good chunk of time figuring out how to fix PaLATE so that we could reliably use it in class. The version you download from the web has some major errors that essentially render its output meaningless. Here is the version of PaLATE you should use (it's got all the corrections discussed):

HIPERPAV III

Ruiz, J.M.; Rasmussen, R.O.; Chang, G.K.; Dick, J.C. and Nelson, P.K. (2005). • This is the user's manual included with HIPERPAV II. You can find it in the HIPERPAV II help files or you can view it here.
  • Read Section 2.1 (p.5-10) for now. You can read other stuff too.
